The rat was brown, Ellis could see it out of the corner of his eye. Its nose was as pink as a piglet and the whiskers that protruded were thick and black. Some were bent and others broken off halfway down and they tickled and prickled against his clean-shaven cheek. The rat’s front paws reached up and pressed its body against the side of Ellis’ head and one of the whiskers scraped against Ellis’ open and unblinking eye. A thick layer of drool continued to ooze out of Ellis’ open mouth, and as the rat sniffed around Ellis’ face, the drool seemed to thicken with every sniff. As if the closer the rat got to his mouth, the more abundant the spittle flowed.
